The Britten Museum offers students an inspiring look into the life of a local innovator who redefined engineering through imagination, persistence, and bold ideas.

While the Britten Museum features some of the world’s most remarkable motorcycles, the real story is about people. It’s about a family, a partnership, team work and a belief in doing things differently. Through the life of John Britten and those around him, visitors gain insight into creativity, resilience, and the courage to follow an idea.

This makes the experience inclusive and widely relevant and not limited by age, background, or gender. The response from visitors consistently shows that the inspiration found here reaches far beyond engineering, connecting with anyone who has ever dared to think differently.

John Britten was a gifted designer and engineer, and a neurodiverse learner with dyslexia. His journey shows young people that challenges and creativity can go hand-in-hand, and that innovation can come from anyone. With vision and perseverance, John proved Kiwis can take on the world and win. Lessons can apply to sport, the arts, physics, general business and personal life.

Students and teachers can explore engaging displays on how John dreamed, experimented, and built, alongside artefacts from his life and several of his bikes, including the world-famous Britten V1000.

The museum supports STEAM learning through hands-on discovery, design thinking, and local history. We can tailor the experience to suit the needs of your students -  feel free to speak direct to us.

We invite schools to spark curiosity and connect students with a Canterbury icon that is accessible to all at an affordable* rate.
